What’s New in Streaming, Including ‘Harry Potter’ Quiz Tournament and ‘Proud Family’ Revival

Helen Mirren will host a quiz series devoted to Harry Potter to air on WarnerMedia channels, including HBO Max. The four-part Harry Potter: Hogwarts Tournament of Houses will premiere later this year as a simulcast event on Cartoon Network’s ACME Night and TBS. Although she has never appeared in the eight Potter movies, Mirren said, “I knew someday I’d get a Harry Potter role, and I’m so pleased to take part in the 20-year film celebration.”

Here are additional deals and projects announced this week:

  • Elvira’s 40th Anniversary, Very Scary, Very Special Special will debut on Shudder on Sept. 25 on the Shudder app, then AMC+ on Sept. 27. Elvira supplies her own blend of witty commentary to a horror movie lineup that includes Elvira: Mistress of the Dark, House on Haunted Hill and Messiah of Evil.

  • Emily Deschanel will have her hands full in Netflix’s upcoming limited thriller series Devil in Ohio. According to the show’s description, “when hospital psychiatrist Dr. Suzanne Mathis (Deschanel) shelters a mysterious cult escapee, her world is turned upside down as the strange girl’s arrival threatens to tear her own family apart.” The show is based on Daria Polatin’s 2017 novel.

  • Late-night talk-fest The Amber Ruffin Show has landed a second season pickup from Peacock. The weekly show will air its final first season episode on Sept. 17. Season two is set to kick off Friday, Oct. 8.

Peacock is a subscription video streaming service from NBCUniversal that includes original shows, blockbuster movies, and classic television series. Peacock is home to “Yellowstone,” and “The Office,” as well as original hits like “Poker Face” and “Bel-Air.” You can also watch live sports including NFL, MLB, WWE, Olympics, Premier League, NASCAR, French Open, College Football and Basketball, and PGA Tour. Premium Plus subscribers can stream their local NBC feed in all 210 markets.

Peacock includes news, entertainment, sports, late-night, and reality from various NBCU properties including NBC, Bravo, and E!.

Peacock also includes the entire library of Bravo shows and has exclusives like “Below Deck: Down Under.” They also include live and on-demand access to Hallmark channels.

The company has acquired the rights to many classic shows like “Parks and Recreation,” and the entire Dick Wolf library including “Law & Order” and “Chicago Fire.”

The service also features blockbusters and critically-acclaimed films from Universal Pictures, Focus Features, DreamWorks Animation, Illumination and content acquired from Hollywood’s biggest studios.

  • Hulu has announced a new mystery series with Mandy Patinkin. He’ll play a detective hunting for a killer on a luxury ocean liner. The show will be called Career Opportunities in Murder and Mayhem. Per the official description, “everyone on board is hiding something… but is one of them a killer?”

  • The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder revival launches in 2022 on Disney+. The animated series cast, celebrating the show’s 20th anniversary, includes Lizzo; Lil Nas X; Chance the Rapper; Normani; Leslie Odom Jr., and Tiffany Haddish, among others. The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder continues the story of Penny Proud and her madcap family: parents Oscar and Trudy, twin siblings BeBe and CeCe, and grandmother Suga Mama.

  • Citizen Hearst streams on PBS Sept. 27 and 28. The American Experience bio chronicles one of the most powerful men of the 20th Century and the model for Orson Welles’ legendary Citizen Kane. By the 1930s, William Randolph Hearst controlled the largest media empire in the country: 28 newspapers, a movie studio, a syndicated wire service, radio stations, and 13 magazines. His home, Hearst Castle, in San Simeon, Calif., was a monument to extravagance. Hearst married and had five sons, but also conducted a decades-long affair with actress Marion Davies.

  • Documentary+, the documentary streaming platform, is now available on VIZIO SmartCast TVs. It launched as an AVOD streaming service in January 2021. Documentary+ showcases the work of noted filmmakers, including Spike Jonze, Kathryn Bigelow, Penny Lane, Elaine May, Jessica Beshir, Terrence Malick, Werner Herzog and Sam Pollard. Included in the existing library is a docuseries with Anthony Bourdain and VICE, A Cook's Tour, which chronicles the late chef’s earliest global travels.
