YouTube TV Subscribers Outside of New York and Los Angeles, Unexpectedly Lose Fox Sports RSN

While yesterday we learned that YouTube TV new deal with Sinclair Broadcast Group would see Fox Sports Prime Ticket, Fox Sports West, and YES Network dropped from the service, it seems to have broader implications. While the new deal covers 19 of the 21 Fox Sports RSNs, many subscribers outside of their primary market lost their Fox Sports RSN.

The Streamable has identified nearly 70 markets that lost at least one Fox Sports RSN in the change. Fox Sports Ohio and Fox Sports Southwest were most impacted, disappearing in over 15 markets. Fox Sports South and Fox Sports Southwest, each were lost in over 10 markets. SportsTime Ohio, Fox Sports Midwest, Fox Sports North, and Fox Sports Sun were each lost in at least five markets.

This is a big deal for streamers because in those secondary markets, they are still considered local viewers, so they don’t have the option to switch to an out-of-market package like MLB.TV, NBA League Pass online, or NHL.TV.

While YouTube TV hasn’t confirmed this, it appears that they have narrowed the viewing area to just those in the primary market.

A YouTube TV subscriber in Iowa City said that prior to yesterday they received Fox Sports Midwest and Fox Sports North — which are no longer available in their market. Since the Minnesota Wild (Fox Sports North), St. Louis Blues (Fox Sports Midwest), and St. Louis Cardinals (Fox Sports Midwest) are all considered in their local area, they won’t be able to watch on NHL.TV and MLB.TV respectively.

This isn’t limited to just one set of RSNs or markets either. A customer in Toledo, OH lost Fox Sports Ohio, SportsTime Ohio, and Fox Sports Detroit. Another outside of Amarillo, lost Fox Sports Southwest, which means no Texas Rangers or Dallas Mavericks games — which are blacked out on out-of-market packages in their area.

Fortunately, for those affected, other services that carry the channels, Hulu Live TV and AT&T TV NOW, are still offering Fox Sports RSNs in nearby cities outside the primary market.
