D.C. United Games Will Be Streamed Exclusively By FloSports

Late last year we reported that streamers were bidding for D.C. United local media rights after the expiration of their current rights deal. Today it was announced that FloSports, a subscription streaming sports service, has acquired the TV rights to the MLS team through 2022.

The deal will see FloSports broadcast 21 D.C. United games this season, with the remainder of the games will on national TV networks like ESPN, FS1, and UniMas. This means that you’ll have to supplement your cable or streaming bundle to see every game of Wayne Rooney’s full first season with the team. The service currently costs $30/month or $150/year, but they will create a plan just D.C. United games.

The deal comes as a surprise with much bigger media copmanies like YouTube TV, Hulu Live TV, and Verizon reportedly bidding to become the new home for the team. Moving away from traditional cable has been the trend for MLS teams. YouTube TV is currently the exclusive home for LA FC, Orlando City, and Seattle Sounders local telecasts, while ESPN+ carries local broadcasts for the Chicago Fire.

The Austin-based FloSports raised $21 million in venture funding in mid-2016. They currently offer overseas and niche sports, as well as overflow Big Ten events not airing on Big Ten Network.
