The sleek elite high-school show “The Politician” is back for season two. Ryan Murphy’s black comedy premieres June 19 on Netflix, starring Ben Platt (Tony winner for “Evan Hansen”) as Payton Hobart.
Of course, time has marched on, and now an adult Payton is challenging Dede Standish (Judith Light) in the New York State Senate race. Standish comes armed for battle: She’s got a savvy, take-no-prisoners chief of staff (Bette Midler) in her corner.
The new season has plenty of political and familial plot twists, as we pick up Payton’s trajectory for his long-held obsession: becoming President of the United States.
Netflix revealed a few story lines for the Golden Globes-nominated show: “His mother, Georgina Hobart (Gwyneth Paltrow), makes a momentous decision that threatens to upstage him and everything he’s hoping to accomplish. But if Payton wants to rise above petty politics and succeed without compromising his character, he must find his voice and strengthen his political message to inspire and excite the voters.”
The cast also includes Zoey Deutch, Lucy Boynton, Bob Balaban, David Corenswet, Julia Schlaepfer, Laura Dreyfuss, Theo Germaine, Rahne Jones, Jessica Lange, and Benjamin Barrett.
Murphy triples as writer, showrunner and executive producer for the show.
