Sling is Still the Largest Live Streaming Service, But is Struggling to Grow

Dish Network announced their 2018 3rd Quarter results today, and growth of Sling TV, their Live TV Streaming Service has slowed.

The company shared that while Sling TV has reached 2.37 million subscribers, the service only added 26,000 net subscribers this quarter. This was down ~35% from last quarter where they added 41,000 net subscribers.

The drop in user growth was likely the result of increased competition from services like Hulu Live TV and YouTube TV, the price increase of Sling Orange to $25, and the loss of channels like Univision, El Rey, and ABC.

Sling TV was not able offset the a large decline in Dish satellite subscribers. The company lost 367,000 satellite subscribers this quarter, almost twice the previous quarter. The company is currently in multiple carriage disputes with Univision and HBO.

Sling TV is still the largest vMVPD with 2.37 million subscribers, ahead of DIRECTV NOW who reported 1.85 million subscribers just a few weeks ago. Hulu Live TV announced in September that they had reached 1 million subscribers, while speculation place YouTube TV at 800,000, PlayStation Vue at 400,000, and fuboTV at 250,000.
