Steven Soderbergh Signs Major Deal With WarnerMedia, Includes HBO Max Shows

Oscar winner Steven Soderbergh (“Traffic”) is expanding his relationship with WarnerMedia.

The film director acclaimed for “Erin Brokovitch,” who won an Emmy for HBO’s “Behind the Candelabra,” just sealed a three-year deal to create new shows for HBO and streamer HBO Max.

It will include delivery of mainstream and niche projects alike. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Soderbergh already has a strong alliance with WarnerMedia, having directed the comedy “Let Them All Talk” with Meryl Streep, which debuts on HBO Max this year. He stated several reasons for the expansive deal, including: “I get to witness and participate in the building of something new at a very large scale.”

In addition to the Soderbergh commitment, HBO Max has ordered eight epodes of the food documentary series “The Event.” It is a behind-the-scenes look at the events created by restaurateur and Michelin-star winner Wolfgang Puck and Wolfgang Puck Catering. Each hour-long episode follows Puck’s team, introducing viewers to opulence and luxury. The team is renown for catering stellar events, such as the Academy Awards’ Oscar party.

Kevin Reilly, Chief Content Officer HBO Max-president of TNT, TBS and TruTV, says “The Event” will showcase “the most exclusive A-list events we all wish we were invited to.”

The streamer has also greenlit “The Uninhabitable Earth” anthology series, based on David Wallace-Wells’ bestseller. Each episode serves as an eco-warning about the dangers of climate change and global warming. Adam McKay (“Succession,” “The Big Short”) will executive produce, as well as write and direct the first episode.

McKay recently closed a five-year, overall television deal with HBO-HBO Max.
