Tom Hanks’ WWII Drama ‘Greyhound’ Bypasses Theaters, Heads for Apple TV Plus

Apple TV+ has picked up “Greyhound” starring Tom Hanks.

The WWII drama was initially slated for a theatrical release June 12, now Sony Pictures has decided to go the streaming route.

No release date has been announced, but the premiere will launch in more than 100 countries.

The action picture focuses on the Battle of the Atlantic, which began when the U.S. joined with England and other European nations to fight the Nazis. The script is based on C.S. Forester’s “The Good Shepherd.”

Hanks both stars and wrote the screenplay. He is joined in the cast by Stephen Graham, Rob Morgan and Elisabeth Shue.

Directed by Oscar-winner Aaron Schneider (“Two Soldiers,” “Get Low”), “Greyhound” is the latest Sony picture to move onto streaming platforms. “Charm City Kings” and “An American Pickle” will air on HBO Max.

Apple TV+ is currently looking to expand its content library by acquiring more TV shows and movies. Director-screenwriter Sofia Coppola is developing an adaptation of the 1913 Edith Wharton novel “The Custom of the Country.” The streamer also bought the documentary “Boys State” from co-directors Jesse Moss and Amanda McBaine.

Deadline first reported the “Greyhound” news.
