WarnerMedia Considering Naming New Streaming Service and Netflix Competitor, HBO Max

WarnerMedia has been pretty hush hush about the name of its upcoming streaming service and people have naturally been curious as to why. In January, reports came out that the company may be naming the service VergeTV, after MediaPost Senior Editor, Alex Weprin, spotted a trademark filing for the names “VergeTV” and “Verge TV.”

Now, TVLine is reporting that while the AT&T-owned company is still looking at various titles, HBO Max is a current front runner. The name seems to be a portmanteau of HBO and Cinemax which, along with Warner Bros. movies and TV shows, will be bundled together for $16-17 when the streaming service comes out.

Projects being developed for the service currently include: The Flight Attendant, a Kaley Cuoco-led thriller about a woman accused of a mysterious murder; Dune: The Sisterhood, a female-centric spinoff of the Dune franchise; Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai, an animated prequel series exploring the iconic critters’ origins; and Love Life, a romantic-comedy anthology series starring Anna Kendrick.

In addition, household franchises such as Friends (currently on Netflix), Seinfeld and The Big Bang Theory are expected to make their way to the new service.
