WarnerMedia Expands Distribution Deal With YouTube TV, HBO Max Will Be Available on the Platform at Launch

As the launch of HBO Max gets closer and closer, it seems WarnerMedia is taking all measures to ensure the service is available to as many people as possible. The media giant has expanded a distribution deal with YouTube TV that will allow HBO Max to be available on the platform when it launches in May. The channel will be a premium add-on to the Live TV Streaming Service, which will likely match the $14.99 a month that it is available directly from HBO.

“As consumers’ media consumption habits continually evolve and the landscape becomes more and more dynamic, our goal remains constant, and that is to make the portfolio of WarnerMedia networks available as widely as possible,” said Rich Warren, president of WarnerMedia Distribution.

In addition to HBO Max, YouTube TV will also carry HBO and Cinemax for the first time starting this Spring and continue to carry WarnerMedia’s TBS, TNT, truTV, CNN, HLN, Turner Classic Movies, Adult Swim and Cartoon Network, which have been available on the platform since 2018. The service will carry both linear channels and on-demand content from the HBO Max.

“Our commitment at YouTube TV is to deliver TV to our members how and when they want it,” said Lori Conkling, Global Head of Partnerships at YouTube TV. “We are thrilled to continue our partnership with WarnerMedia to deliver their family of networks that are popular among our members, as well as introduce HBO, Cinemax and HBO Max to our growing line-up of premium content.”

HBO had seen declining distribution through Live TV Streaming Services. While it is bundled with AT&T TV NOW, before this deal it was only available on Hulu Live TV, following the shutdown of PlayStation Vue. In November 2018, HBO was removed from Dish and their streaming service Sling TV and haven’t seen them return.

Earlier this month, Google and Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai shared that YouTube TV has surpassed two million subscribers. The service is now the third largest Live TV Streaming Service, behind Hulu Live TV, which announced 3.2 million subscribers, and Sling TV which had 2.59 million subscribers at the end of the last quarter.

YouTube TV is now substantially larger than AT&T TV Now, which lost 219,000 subscribers and now has fewer than a million, and fuboTV, which is projected to have about 300,000.
