Amazon Highlights New Original Series and ‘Thursday Night Football’ Renewal in Q1 2020 Earnings Report

Amazon highlighted the launch of Prime Video Cinema, new Amazon Original series such as “Making the Cut” and the renewal of their NFL partnership to stream “Thursday Night Football” games in their Q1 2020 earnings report today.

Amazon also stated that “Fire TV’s content catalog continues to grow internationally with new apps, including Disney+, available on Fire TV and Fire Tablet devices in the U.K., France, Germany, Italy, and Spain.”

But much of Amazon’s earnings report focused on the coronavirus pandemic’s overall impact on the company.

“From online shopping to AWS to Prime Video and Fire TV, the current crisis is demonstrating the adaptability and durability of Amazon’s business as never before, but it’s also the hardest time we’ve ever faced,” founder and CEO Jeff Bezos stated in a release.

Brian T. Olsavsky, Amazon’s senior vice president and chief financial officer, said during the earnings call that “first-time viewers nearly doubled” in March for Prime Video due to people staying at home.

With so much competition, Amazon has been diversifying their content offerings. Just yesterday, Amazon announced they will be bringing “Thursday Night Football” to their users through 2022. The streamer renewed their deal with the NFL and will stream a dozen NFL games worldwide for the next three seasons on Prime Video and Twitch.

Amazon has also added another perk under the new deal: The e-commerce giant will also “have exclusive global rights to one late-season game globally on Prime Video and Twitch each of the next three seasons,” Variety reported. The game will be played on a Saturday in the second half of the 2020 NFL regular season and will air in the participating teams’ home markets.

The company has also been doing their part to add to their customers entertainment offerings as the coronavirus has forced people to stay at home. In March, Amazon gave access to children’s content that was previously exclusive to Prime Video customers, including Amazon original series “Just Add Magic,” “Pete the Cat” and “If You Give a Mouse a Cookie.” Select seasons of PBS Kids shows such as “Arthur,” “Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood,” “Odd Squad” and “Wild Kratts” are also available, and in Europe, third-party content includes “Peppa Pig” and “Ben & Holly’s Little Kingdom.”

Prime Video later announced they would be adding HBO original series, Warner Bros. movies and 20 “Sesame Street” episodes to their platform for free. The company struck a deal with HBO and now Amazon account holders in the U.S. can stream all episodes of HBO’s “Big Little Lies,” “Barry,” “Ballers,” “Silicon Valley” and “Succession. The list of Warner Bros. movies includes “The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part,” “Pokémon Detective Pikachu” and “Smallfoot.” In addition, select recent episodes of “Sesame Street” are also available.
