Apple CEO Tim Cook Lauds Oprah Winfrey and Lady Gaga for Streaming Contributions During Pandemic

During Apple’s Q2 2020 earnings call today, CEO Tim Cook lauded Oprah Winfrey and Lady Gaga for their streaming contributions on Apple TV+ and Apple TV during the coronavirus pandemic.

“We worked with everyone from Oprah to Lady Gaga to inform, entertain and get back through Apple TV,” Cook said.

Deadline noted that Oprah Winfrey taped interview segments for Apple TV+, while Lady Gaga “helped spearhead the star-studded ‘Together at Home’ concert, which streamed via Apple TV.”

But like Amazon, Apple execs spent most of their time on the call discussing COVID-19’s impact on their overall business.

“In this difficult environment, our users are depending on Apple products in renewed ways to stay connected, informed, creative, and productive,” Cook stated in a release. “We feel motivated and inspired to not only keep meeting these needs in innovative ways, but to continue giving back to support the global response, from the tens of millions of face masks and custom-built face shields we’ve sent to medical professionals around the world, to the millions we’ve donated to organizations like Global Citizen and America’s Food Fund.”

Earlier this year, 9to5Mac pointed out that a report in The Wall Street Journal said Apple TV+ has garnered 33.6 million subscribers since launching.

Most of the Apple TV+ subscribers are likely to be consumers who are taking advantage of the one-year free trial Apple offered with the purchase of a new iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Mac or Apple TV, 9to5Mac noted.

Apple TV+ launched on Nov. 1 and is priced at $4.99. In addition to the offer mentioned above, the company also gave away Apple TV+ to Apple Music subscribers on the student plan — which is also $4.99 — at no additional charge. Reports came out late last year stating the company was looking into bundling its digital offerings — Apple TV+, Apple Music and Apple News+ — in 2020.

The service launched with 11 originals, including “The Morning Show,” which Jennifer Aniston recently received a SAG Award for.
