Comcast and Starz Reach New Carriage Agreement as Lionsgate and NBCUniversal Sign Cross-Streaming Deal

Stephanie Sengwe

Comcast and Starz have finally reached a new carriage deal days before their Dec. 31 deadline. The new deal ensures that Starz networks will continue to be carried on Comcast’s Xfinity TV, which bodes well for “Power” fans as the series is set to come back for another season in January.

Comcast’s parent company, NBCUniversal, also inked a deal with Starz’s parent company, Lionsgate. The deal will bring Lionsgate content to Peacock and transversely bring NBCU content to StarzPlay. Financial terms for both deals were not disclosed.

“We look forward to continuing our longstanding partnership with Comcast to deliver great content and great value to our customers,” said Starz president and CEO Jeffrey Hirsch. “Our ongoing relationship with Comcast reflects our ability to unlock opportunities across all of our businesses to the benefit of our subscribers.”

The news comes days after reports came out that NBCU’s Peacock will offer live video streaming, in addition to two tiers of pricing and a free tier. According to CNBC, when subscribers log into the service — set to launch in April 2020 — they’ll be greeted with live video, similar to turning on traditional television. Live content will reportedly come from NBC News Now — NBC’s free steaming news service that will integrate with Peacock — or an on-demand show.

In addition, NBCUniversal is also considering to offer the service in three tiers — free, $5 and $10. The free tier, which was first reported on back in November, will be ad-supported, while the $5 tier offers limited ads and the $10 tier is completely ad-free, as The Information first reported. Though both paid tiers will include the full suite of NBCUniversal’s content, the free tier is reported to have a limited amount of content. The free version will likely not include the entire nine seasons of “The Office,” for example, which NBC paid $500 million for.
