Comcast Annonunces New 4K Global Streaming Device Called XiOne

Comcast has announced the launch of the XiOne, a new global wireless streaming device currently available in Italy and Germany for Sky Q customers, and beginning its rollout in the United States for Xfinity Flex customers. In Europe, the XiOne enables the first delivery of video services over IP for Sky customers.

The XiOne is the first Comcast-connected streaming device that will be made available to all its global customers across Comcast’s Xfinity and Sky operations, and to its syndication partners.

The XiOne is a plug-and-play device that features faster processing and increased memory, enabling swift switching and navigation in and out of apps. The device supports WiFi 6, 4K UHD, HDR, Dolby Vision, and Dolby Atmos and comes with a new simpler and smaller voice remote designed with streamers in mind.

“When Sky joined the Comcast family, we brought together our engineers to share insights, roadmaps, talent, and technology to support our global customers. The launch of our new XiOne device is a direct result of these efforts and underscores how our collaborative development approach can bring new and innovative streaming products to markets faster and more efficiently,” said Charlie Herrin, President of Technology for Comcast.

The Xfinity Flex platform, in comparison, includes a wireless 4K HDR streaming media player with the Xfinity Voice Remote. The Flex brings together your streaming entertainment experience similar to a Roku, Fire TV, or Apple TV streaming player.

Flex comes with more than 10,000 free online movies and TV shows—including live streaming TV—from ESPN3, Xumo, Pluto, Tubi TV, Cheddar, YouTube, and more. The Xfinity Flex box features an integrated guide and voice control, enabling customers to easily browse and access programming across apps like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, HBO, and Showtime, rent and purchase movies and shows from the digital store, access their digital lockers across platforms by pairing their account with Movies Anywhere, or listen to music from Pandora, iHeartRadio, and XITE.

While Flex won’t support traditional vMVPD like YouTube TV, they will have access to Sling TV's International packages. That’s because Xfinity Flex customers are able to upgrade to the full Xfinity X1 cable service right from the guide, which offers hundreds of live channels, tens of thousands of on-demand titles, and a cloud DVR.

Comcast says it plans to make the XiOne device available to Xfinity X1 customers and syndication partners in the future.
