Disney Plus to Hit 202 Million Global Subscribers by 2025, According to New Study

Disney+ is due for yet another huge subscriber climb. According to a new study by UK firm Digital TV Research, the streaming service is predicted to hit 202 million global subscribers by 2025. The number is way above the research firm’s original estimate of 126 million and well above Disney’s own predicted range of 60 million to 90 million by 2024. The boost, according to Deadline, comes as result of the stay-at-home orders enforced across the world due to the coronavirus.

According to Digital TV Research, Netflix will maintain its spot as the global leader five years from now with approximately 258 million subscribers. HBO Max and Apple TV+, however, are predicted to be significantly behind them in 2025, with 25 million and 14 million subscribers, respectively.

The advent of COVID-19 has given streaming services a big leg up across the board. Just last month, the Pivotal Research Group, upped Netflix’s global subscribers forecast in a new report. Analyst Jeff Wlodarczak boosted his forecast for the streamers’ subs additions for the first quarter from 7.90 million to 8.45 million. For Q2, he predicted a rise from nearly 4.88 million to 5.70 million.

During their Q1 2020 earnings report, Netflix announced they reached 182.86 million global subscribers, up 15.77 million subscribers since their Q4 2019 earnings report back in January, when they reported that they reached 167.09 million global subscribers with 61 million in the U.S.

In their Q2 earnings report, Disney revealed their widely popular streaming service reached 33.5 million subscribers, but by May 4, had reached 54.5 million subscribers. Some of those come from distribution agreements from operators in Europe that bundle the service for their subscribers. This is up from the 26.5 million subscribers they reported last quarter and 28.6 million they had as of Feb. 3.
