HBO’s ‘Lovecraft Country’ Delivers Best Digital Premiere Numbers Since ‘Watchmen’

HBO’s horror drama “Lovecraft Country” scared up some notable streaming stats.

The premiere of the J.J. Abrams-Jordan Peele executive-produced show garnered 760,000 viewers for its Sunday premiere — but with replays and streaming, that number kicked up to 1.4 million, per The Hollywood Reporter.

In fact, the added streaming and replays comprised 46 percent of total first-night viewers, which puts “Lovecraft” in “Watchmen” territory. HBO reports the show, created by Misha Green, had the best digital premiere since “Watchmen.”

“Lovecraft Country” is set in the 1950s. As a black man searches for his missing father, he learns the terrifying secrets of the town where famed horror writer H.P. Lovecraft based his stories. Both “Watchmen” and “Lovecraft County” are set in approximate time eras. The former posits superheroes that change history in the 1940s-1960s, though the premise is vastly different.

However, what they share is a similar appeal to audiences.

“Watchmen” earned 1.5 million viewers cross-platform at its premiere. Replays and digital added up to 47 percent of total viewing.
