Plex has added yet another partnership for its upcoming streaming service, striking a deal with Lionsgate to add some more content to the ad-supported platform. In August, the app signed a deal with Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution for the rights to a package of feature films available to users only in the United States.
However, the deal with Lionsgate permits Plex to distribute their content worldwide, with geo-restrictions dependent on each title. With plans to launch their service before the year closes out, Plex is reported to be in talks with additional studios.
“Lionsgate is one of the biggest names in the business and we know our millions of users will enjoy free access to their library of movies,” stated Plex CEO Keith Valory. “Plex caters to the most passionate and discerning media lovers all over the world, so it is important for us to be able to bring great content like this together in one beautiful app for all of our users across the globe.”
The deals with Lionsgate and Warner Bros. allows Plex to compete with other streaming services such as Tubi. In January, Tubi announced that hey had secured $25m in growth capital to build out their content catalog. Weeks later, they announced that they inked a deal with NBCUniversal to bring 400 classic TV shows and films to the platform. The deal brought shows such as Xena: Warrior Princess, Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, The A-Team, and many more to Tubi.
