Pluto TV Adds Classic Doctor Who Episodes as Free Streaming Service Reaches 15 Million Users

Earlier this year Viacom announced that they had acquired ad-supported streaming TV service, Pluto TV for $340 million. The service offers 100 linear channels of lifestyle, news, sports, and entertainment content through partnerships with 130 media networks.

Today, the ad-supported streaming service announced that they had acquired 200 classic Doctor Who episodes from BBC Studios for their U.S. streamers. The episodes will include Doctor Who played by Tom Baker, Peter Davison, Jon Pertwee, and the original, William Hartnell.

In an interview with Variety, Pluto TV Co-Founder & CEO Tom Ryan shared that the company has reached 15 million unique monthly active users, up from 12 million when they were acquired in January. The service can stream across a wide array of devices including Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, Android TV, Chromecast, PS4, iOS, Android, and your computer.

The deal in total includes nearly 1,000 episodes of BBC Studios content like Antiques Roadshow, Being Erica, Bedlam, Primeval, and Robin Hood. As part of the deal, Pluto TV will launch dedicated channels for Doctor Who and Antiques Roadshow.

The ad-supported streaming market has seen rapid growth since Pluto TV’s acquisition. Last month, another similar service, XUMO was rumored to be in acquisition talks with broadcasters including Sinclair Media Group. Earlier this year, Sinclair launched their own ad-supported streaming service, STIRR.

One of their biggest competitors though, Tubi, has rapidly expanded their content library to include more than 12,000 movies and television series. In February, Tubi and NBCUniversal has agreed to a deal to bring 400 classic shows like Xena: Warrior Princess and Hercules: The Legendary Journeys to the service.
