STIRR Adds 17 New Channels, Hits 1.3 Million Downloads

STIRR has been on upward trajectory since its January debut.

Sinclair Broadcast Group created STIRR as a streaming service that would bring local TV news to cord cutters nationwide. That move leverages Sinclair’s ownership of 191 TV stations in 89 markets, in addition to airing various news and entertainment channels.

Unlike Live TV Streaming Services like Hulu Live TV or YouTube TV, it’s free and ad-supported — and now it is gaining momentum.

The 17 new channels include PeopleTV, Newsy, and FilmRise Classic TV (a full list below), which have been trickling in over the last month. That adds to the service’s existing channels, which count Cheddar, MovieMix, and World Poker Tour, among others.

Plus, in the past month, STIRR hit 1.3 million downloads and session times have increased: The average session is now more than 53 minutes and over an hour on connected TV devices. That builds on a July announcement that STIRR had hit the 1 million download mark, noting viewers on average watched the channel twice a week.

STIRR now provides 70 channels and 3,300 hours of video on demand. It is accessible via Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, iOS, Android and the web.

STIRR streams a curated, 24/7 program lineup based on where viewers live. For example, the Sports channel can show high-school football, while the Life channel might run a local lifestyle program like “Seattle Refined,” depending on the local Sinclair TV station in that city.

“By creating the STIRR CITY channel format, local TV stations can now extend their programming strength to OTT,” Adam Ware, STIRR’s General Manager, stated at the channel’s launch.

Another STIRR attraction is its own channels: STIRR High School Sports, STIRR Biographies, STIRR Classics, STIRR Drama, STIRR Horror, STIRR Westerns and STIRR Comedy.

As part of its momentum, STIRR will add 10 linear channels by year’s end and will soon expand its roster of cities to New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and San Francisco.
