‘Always Be My Maybe’ Director to Helm HBO Max’s ‘I’ll Be the One,’ ‘Afro.Punks Added to Lineup

YA novel “I’ll Be the One” is being adapted by HBO Max. Nahnatchka Khan, who directed the rom-com “Always Be My Maybe” on Netflix, will also produce and possibly direct.

The story revolves around a bisexual Korean-American teen girl who dreams of being a K-pop singing-dancing star on a reality show. Colleen McGuinness (“Ramy,” “30 Rock”) will adapt Lyla Lee’s novel, which is being published this summer.

The film addresses issues of conventional beauty and the importance of self-determination.

The project is from Anonymous Content, part of Aevitas’ first-look deal with the streamer. Anonymous partner Joy Gorman Wettels is set to produce, along with Kahn, who created and is currently a producer of ABC’s “Fresh Off The Boat.”

Separately, the streamer has put “Afro.Punks” in development from writer Jenina Kibuka (“Insatiable,” “Sabrina”). “Afro.Punks” is a coming-of-age teen drama.

Kibuka executive produces with actress Gabrielle Union (“LA’s Finest,” Being Mary Jane”) and Holly Shakoor Fleischer’s I’ll Have Another Productions, based at Sony Pictures TV.

HBO Max is also adapting “UNpregnant” with Haley Lu Richardson (“Five Feet Apart”) as a feature film, as well as a 30-minute comedy about comedian Aida Rodriquez, executive produced by Tiffany Haddish.

Debuting in May, HBO Max will charge $15/month.
