Apple TV Plus to Stream Sofia Coppola’s ‘On the Rocks,’ ‘Hitmen’ Renewed at Peacock

Sofia Coppola has written and directed “On the Rocks,” starring Bill Murray, Rashida Jones and Marlon Wayans. Opening first in theaters, the movie heads to Apple TV+ in October. The project re-teams Coppola and Murray, who worked together in “Lost in Translation.” She won an Oscar for best original screenplay for the film, while Murray earned a best actor nomination.

Here’s a look at other deals and upcoming projects:

  • “Hitmen,” starring former “Great British Bake Off” presenters Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins, just got renewed for season two at Sky and Peacock. The hapless duo play best friends who fall into this crazy work, going on adventures in their van.

  • XUMO has launched a linear streaming channel for the food and lifestyle Gusto AVOD brand. Adding to the current 75 hours of Gusto content, XUMO viewers can stream new titles, such as “Fresh Market Dinners,” “Fish the Dish” season two, “Road Grill” and “Cook Like a Chef” season four. XUMO is free via a wide range of smart TVs, the web and other streaming devices, including the XUMO mobile app for iOS and Android.

  • Phoebe Robinson will star in a solo stand-up special at HBO Max. The actress and comedian (“2 Dope Queens,” “Black Frasier”) is making her TV debut. She will also executive produce the effort. Chelsea Handler, Tracy Morgan and Marlon Wayans have also showcased specials for the streamer.

  • Shudder Films landed all U.S. rights to three women-driven horror films — Vincent Paronnaud’s “Hunted,” Elza Kephart’s “Slaxx” and Natasha Kermani’s “Lucky” — at the Fantasia International Film Festival. Previously, Shudder released select titles theatrically and on home entertainment platforms. Fantasia is going online this year due to the pandemic, with virtual events from August 20 to Sept. 2.

  • Cinedigm is launching an SVOD service — CONtv, Dove Channel and Docurama – on Cox Contour and Contour Stream Player. Cox TV customers can get the network via the Contour platform. After a free seven-day trial, the service streams for $4.99/month.

  • Ryan and Friends, a new ad-supported channel, is now streaming on The Roku Channel and Sling TV. Launched by pocket.watch and Sunlight Entertainment, owned by the family of successful YouTuber Ryan Kaji, the channel’s programming stars Ryan and his “Ryan’s World” friends, with content from Ryan’s favorite YouTube creators, including Jason Vlogs, Scratch Garden and MarMar Land.
