Disney Plus’ ‘Hamilton’ Was the Most-Watched Title Across All Streaming Platforms in Early July, Study Finds

Stephanie Sengwe

It seems “Hamilton” took no prisoners when the film premiered on Disney+ over the Fourth of July weekend. According to Fierce Video a new study by 7Park Data showed that the movie was the most watched title across all streaming platforms from July 1 through July 5. Not only that, but the film was also watched by 80 percent of Disney+ users and it accounted for 87 percent of time spent on the platform.

The study is consistent with those published by Apptopia after the premiere weekend. According to Apptopia, app downloads of Dinsey+ in the U.S. were up 72.4 percent higher “than the average of the four weekends in June 2020 over comparable time periods (Friday through Sunday),” Variety reported.

Over the course of the weekend, the Disney+ app was downloaded 513,323 times globally, including 266,084 times in the U.S., Apptopia revealed. Since the service is available through pre-existing apps in India and in Japan, those numbers were not included in the global sum. Also not factored in were numbers from people who may have signed up for the service online and through smart TVs and didn’t download the app.

Though “Hamilton” provided a major boost for the platform, Disney+ and other streamers are seeing a decline in viewership from the peaks reached in April, after about a month of lockdowns in the U.S. due to the coronavirus pandemic. 7Park Data reported that average monthly household minutes spent streaming was 640 in June, down 12 percent from April.

Nonetheless, time spent was still higher than it was in March, before the world went into lockdowns. Netflix remained the number one streaming service, accounting for 70 percent of total streaming minutes across all platforms in June. Time spent on the Apple TV platform also spiked from 53 to 80 minutes daily, while shows such as “The Great” and older titles like “Bones” and “Boston Legal” drove traffic for Hulu.
