Disney Plus Plans Revival of ‘Proud Family’

Fern Siegel

Disney+ has ordered a new animated family sitcom “The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder.” It’s a revival of the original acclaimed series, “The Proud Family,” which focused on 14-year-old Penny Proud coping with junior high, alongside her siblings, parents and grandmother.

“Proud Family” aired on the Disney Channel from September 2001 to August 2005. It was praised for its inclusion and cultural diversity, winning a BET Comedy Award and an NAACP Image Award.

The revival reunites the pair behind the original: Bruce W. Smith (“Tarzan,” “The Emperor’s New Groove”) and Ralph Farquhar (“Da Jammies”) are returning as executive producers. They will team with Calvin Brown Jr. (“Married With Children”), tapped as story editor and co-executive producer.

Smith and Farquhar stated: “In our minds, the show never really went away, as we still had tons of stories left to tell.”

The “Proud” cast is also back: Kyla Pratt as Penny Proud, Tommy Davidson as Oscar Proud, Paula Jai Parker as Trudy Proud, Jo Marie Payton as Suga Mama, Karen Malina White as Dijonay Jones, Soleil Moon Frye as Zoey Howzer, Alisa Reyes as LaCienega Boulevardez and Cedric the Entertainer as Uncle Bobby Proud.

Commenting on the original series, Gary Marsh, president-Chief Creative Officer, Disney Channels Worldwide, added: “Under the guise of a family comedy, it provided a brilliant social commentary on our life and times. With this new series, Bruce and Ralph will again challenge everyone to think differently about the world we share.”

The streamer also announced Monday it will debut March 24 in seven European countries.
