Netflix to Premiere Its First Original Animated Feature ‘Klaus’, in November

Stephanie Sengwe

Netflix has gained its first original animated feature titled, Klaus. The film, which which is written by Despicable Me co-creator, Sergio Pablos along with Zach Lewis and Jim Mahoney, chronicles the adventures of Jesper, a failing student at a postal academy, who is stationed at Smeerensburg, a frozen island above the Arctic Circle as he makes some unexpected friendships that bring joy to an otherwise somber place.

Making Klaus as Netflix’s first original animated feature wasn’t the plan until Pablos and the streamer met. “It’s worth noting that when they decided to move forward with Klaus, there was still no feature animation division at Netflix. In fact, we were a bit of a rarity. However, in the two-plus years since we began pre-production we’ve witnessed the incredible transformation that has happened at Netflix in regards to animated features,” he told Deadline.

Like Netflix’s other majorly anticipated film, The Irishman, Klaus will make its way into theaters first before streaming. The animated feature premieres in theaters on Nov. 8, before its released on Netflix on Nov. 15.
