Peacock Chairman Not Worried About Launching Without Roku or Amazon Distribution Deals

Stephanie Sengwe

It seems like Peacock may be going the HBO Max route as NBCUniversal doesn’t currently have any deals in place to put the streamer on Roku or Amazon Fire TV when it launches next week. The streaming service, which will launch nationally on July 15, will be available on most streaming devices with the exception of Roku and Fire TV, which are the two most popular platforms in the streaming vertical. According to CNET, the two companies have 70 percent of the market, with approximately 80 million active users between them.

For Matt Strauss, chairman of Peacock and NBCUniversal’s digital enterprises, however, launching without Roku and Fire TV deals will not affect the service as the company has a long-term plan in place. “When it comes to Peacock, we’ve got a very long-term strategy and vision for what we’re bringing to market,” he told CNET.

“It’s not a sprint, it’s a marathon for us. Our launch date on July 15, is our launch date. We’re in discussions with everybody … we would like to have the app available on all platforms, but we’re committed to launching on the date that we set forth.”

Although Peacock won’t be on Roku or Amazon Fire TV, NBCUniversal has struck deals to bring the service to other significant platforms. In late June, the company announced when the service launches nationally on July 15, it will be available on all Google devices — including Android, Android TV devices, as well as Chromecast and Chromecast built-in devices. In addition, the service will also offer a free extended trial on Peacock Premium to Android and Android TV users until October 15.

In May, NBCUniversal also announced the service would be available on Apple devices, including iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Apple TV 4K and Apple TV HD for its national launch. Users will be able to find Peacock’s content library in Apple’s Watch Now section. To build specific preferences, they can add shows, movies and live sports in the Up Next section. Siri also searches for Peacock content.
