Rose Byrne is slated to star in “Physical,” a dramedy by Annie Weisman (“Almost Family), who will serve as showrunner. Apple TV+ is close to a series order for the show, set in a Southern California beach town in the 1980s.
Byrne, whose breakout role was in FX’s “Damages,” plays a troubled housewife who finds her sense of empowerment in aerobics.
Deadline first reported the news.
Alexandra Cunningham (“Dirty John”), who worked with Weisman on “Desperate Housewives,” will executive produce with Tomorrow Studios, which also produced “Hanna” on Amazon and two series on Netflix: an order for “One Piece” and the upcoming “Cowboy Bebop.”
Bryne is currently costarring with Tiffany Haddish in the just-released Paramount comedy “Like a Boss.” She is also starring onstage in “Medea” with Bobby Cannavale at the Brooklyn Academy of Music.
Hulu is premiering the miniseries “Mrs. America” on April 15, in which Byrne plays Gloria Steinem. The miniseries, about the fight to ratify the ERA, co-stars Cate Blanchett. Byrne will also star with Steve Carell in the political comedy “Irresistible,” written and directed by Jon Stewart, which will be released May 29.
Apple TV+ launched on Nov. 1 and is priced at $4.99/month.
