Ryan Murphy to Launch ‘Hollywood’ on Netflix, a Behind-the-Scenes Look at Tinseltown’s Golden Age
Ryan Murphy (“American Horror Story,” “Glee”) just got the greenlight for “Hollywood,” his second original Netflix series, notes The Wrap. The first, “The Politician,” streamed last September.
The seven-episode series launches May 1 and stars Darren Criss (“Glee,” “The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story”), David Corenswet (“The Politician”) and Jeremy Pope, who became a breakout Broadway star in “Choir Boy” and “Ain’t Too Proud.”
Netflix describes the series as: “’Hollywood’ follows a group of aspiring actors and filmmakers in post-World War II Hollywood as they try to make it in Tinseltown — no matter the cost. Each character offers a unique glimpse behind the gilded curtain of Hollywood’s Golden Age, spotlighting the unfair systems and biases across race, gender and sexuality that continue to this day.”
“Hollywood” boasts an impressive lineup of acting vets, including Jim Parsons, Patti LuPone, Holland Taylor and Dylan McDermott.
Janet Mock, who worked with Murphy on “Pose,” is also slated as a writer-director. Murphy and Ian Brennan (“Glee,” “Scream Queens”) will executive produce.
In February 2018, the multi-award-winning Murphy signed a five-year deal with Netflix for an estimated $300 million to produce TV shows and movies, Deadline reported.
Murphy’s TV roster will include “Halston,” starring Ewan McGregor, a series adaptation of the musical “A Chorus Line,” the second season of “The Politician,” “Ratched,” the “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” prequel starring Sarah Paulson, and a docuseries about Andy Warhol.
On the movie front, Murphy is drawing inspiration from Broadway. He will direct an adaptation of “The Boys in the Band,” starring its Broadway revival cast, which included Parsons, Matt Bomer and Andrew Rannells, as well as the musical “The Prom,” starring Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman, James Corden, Ariana Grande, Awkwafina, Keegan-Michael Key and Rannells.
