T-Mobile CEO: Verizon’s ‘Copy & Paste’ Deal with Disney, ‘No Comparison’ to T-Mobile Deal with Netflix

Last week, Disney and Verizon announced that when the streaming service launches on Nov. 12, Verizon will begin offering 12 months of the service to all new and existing 4G LTE and 5G unlimited wireless customers.

On today’s Q3 2019 Earnings Call, T-Mobile CEO John Legere called the deal “no comparison” to what T-Mobile offers to their subscribers. In 2017, T-Mobile started including Netflix with their T-Mobile One plans, which unlike the Disney/Verizon deal isn’t just for the first year. When Netflix raised prices this year, customers

“I would start by saying there is absolutely no comparison for an offer of 1 year of Disney versus a
lifetime Netflix,” said Legere. “Length isn’t the same, value isn’t the same and certainly, the substance of the offer isn’t the same. So I think it’s not exactly something other than the Vice President of copy and paste that Verizon looked over at our Netflix on our success and did a horrific job of creating it.”

Neville Ray, T-Mobile’s CTO reiterated, “It’s flattering nonetheless. We’ve seen this all throughout the Un-carrier journey where we do something authentic, something bold, something permanent, it makes a big difference to people’s lives and then you see our competitor scramble to copy.”

When Netflix raised prices earlier this year, T-Mobile kept the promotion, but instead discounts up to $11 off your Netflix subscription. This means you get the Basic plan for free or can upgrade to the Standard Plan for $2 or Ultra Plan for $5.

Bundling streaming with your wireless plan has become the new normal for carriers. Other carriers like Sprint include Hulu with your service, while AT&T bundles Live TV skinny bundle, AT&T WatchTV, and will offer HBO Max at no additional cost to those who are AT&T customers with HBO.

In addition to their Netflix deal, T-Mobile has partnered with mobile streaming video service, Quibi, which will launch next year. It’s not yet known whether Quibi will be free for T-Mobile customers.
