‘The Simpsons’ to Start Streaming in Original 4:3 Aspect Ratio on Disney Plus Beginning May 28

Stephanie Sengwe

Fans of “The Simpsons” rejoice as Disney+ has heard your cries and will be streaming the classic show in the original 4:3 aspect ratio beginning May 28. Al Jean, the executive producer and showrunner of the beloved animated series, made the announcement via Twitter and the streamer confirmed moments after.

When Disney+ launched back in November, they formatted “The Simpsons” to a widescreen 16:9 aspect ratio, a big difference from the original 4:3 ratio. While the picture quality may be better, fans were unhappy about how the 16:9 aspect ratio cropped out “many visual gags entirely,” The Verge noted.

After many fans spoke out, the company decided to format episodes back to the original 4:3 ratio with Disney+ making an announcement on their Twitter account on April 3.

In addition to bringing back the original format, the streamer also revealed the Oscar-nominated animated short film, “The Longest Daycare,” will be available on the platform on May 29. The film, which stars Maggie Simpson, joins her other spinoff, “Playdate With Destiny,” which premiered on the service on April 10.
