YouTube TV is Testing New Feature to Jump to “News Segments” on Recordings

Jason Gurwin

Similar to their feature that let’s you skip through “Top Plays” when you watch recorded sports, YouTube TV is now testing that on news shows. The feature splits up the various news segments through a recorded telecast and lets you quickly skip to a segment to stream. An engineer at the company confirmed that it is a small experiment that they just launched.

The segments are being indexed by YouTube TV and appears to be using the chyron graphics to pull out the text of the news segments. It doesn’t seem to be rolled out across all networks, but users have seen it appear on both MSNBC and CNN.

To access the feature, you have to select “Jump To” below the progress scrubber and then choose the segment you want to watch.

A few weeks ago, YouTube added a similar feature for creators to add “chapters” to their videos. The “News Segments” features works in a similar manner, but seems to be done in a more automated fashion. Similar to other new features by YouTube TV, assuming the feature is successful, they will expand the test to more users in the coming weeks.
