Amazon Books Nicole Kidman’s First Series ‘The Expatriates’

“The Expatriates” will be the first project resulting from Nicole Kidman’s programming deal with Amazon. The show, which has a straight-to-series order with Amazon Prime Video, follows a group of ex-pats living in Hong Kong, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Kidman’s co-executive producer and writer of the series is Lulu Wang, who gained attention for her critically acclaimed comedy-drama film “The Farewell,” released in July 2019. The movie, starring Awkwafina, earned two Golden Globe nominations and $19.6 million at the box office this year.

Kidman’s production company, Blossom Films, brought “The Expatriates” to Amazon; it is based on Janice Y.K. Lee’s 2016 novel. Wang will also direct several episodes.

Wang said she was “drawn to the rich characters and the global yet intimate exploration of life in modern Hong Kong,” adding Kidman and Amazon were “the perfect partners to translate this atmospheric story to screen.”

Amazon Studios head Jennifer Salke praised Wang’s “fantastic eye for authenticity and deep character development skills.”

Blossom Films also produced HBO’s hit “Big Little Lies” and the feature films “Rabbit Hole” and “The Family Fang.”
