Disney+ is dog happy. A remake of the 1989 comedy “Turner & Hooch,” about an adventurous cop and his slobbering canine sidekick, is in development at the streamer, Variety reports.
The original 1989 buddy cop movie, starring Tom Hanks and Dan Aykroyd, is being adapted by 20th Century Fox TV and “Burn Notice” creator Matt Nix, who will write and executive produce the possible series.
Though the film garnered poor reviews, it was a box-office hit with audiences, earning $71 million. A “Turner & Hooch” TV pilot also aired on The Magical World of Disney.
Last month, the streamer released a live-action remake of the classic “Lady and the Tramp” and will release the sled-dog film “Togo” and docu-series “Pick of the Litter” on Friday, Dec. 20.
Disney+ is adept at revamping shows from its massive title list. It’s had great success with the “Star Wars”-inspired “The Mandalorian” and “High School Musical: The Musical: The Series.”
The streaming network will also premiere two of its 2019 blockbuster movies on Jan. 8 and 28, respectively: “Aladdin” and “The Lion King.”
Nix, who has a development deal at Disney’s 20th Century Fox TV, was also part of “The Gifted” Marvel series at Fox.
