Disney Plus Halts Production on ‘Lizzie McGuire’ Reboot After Showrunner Exits

Stephanie Sengwe

It seems we may have to wait a bit longer before “Lizzie McGuire” makes its way to Disney+ as the company halted production on the reboot. According to Variety, creator and showrunner of the series, Terri Minsky, has stepped away from her role after filming two episodes. A new replacement is yet to be named and filming of the series has been put on hold.

Disney first announced the reboot back in August during the D23 Expo, and in October, Disney+ announced Lizzie McGuire’s entire family — Hallie Todd (Jo), Robert Carradine (Sam), and Jake Thomas (Matt McGuire) — would also be reprising their roles. Production on the show began in November.

In the reboot, Lizzie McGuire will be a 30-year-old millennial navigating life in the Big Apple. Just like the 2001 version, this series will also include an animated Lizzie, giving quirky and honest commentary on what is going on with her 30-year-old counterpart.

“Fans have a sentimental attachment to ‘Lizzie McGuire’ and high expectations for a new series,” a Disney spokesperson told Variety. “After filming two episodes, we concluded that we need to move in a different creative direction and are putting a new lens on the show.”
