The play-in tournament gives the number nine seeded team an opportunity to get into the playoffs, if it’s within four games or less of the number eight seeded team. Because of the changes this season, the current number nine seed, the Memphis Grizzlies, will face off against number eight, the Portland Trail Blazers.
In order to secure a spot in the playoffs, the Grizzlies will have to beat the Trail Blazers twice, but the Trail Blazers will have to beat the Grizzlies just once in order to retain their spot. Should the Grizzlies win the first game, the tournament continues on Sunday at 4:30 p.m. ET on ABC as well.
The play-in tournament is only being held for teams in the west because none of the losing teams in the east were within the four-game range of the number eight seed.
