Nexstar to Acquire Tribune Media to Become the Largest Local Network Operator

Nexstar Media Group has agreed to buy Tribune Media for $4.1B. This comes just months after they called off their proposed $3.9B sale to Sinclair.

The deal would add Tribune media’s 42 local stations to Nexstar’s 174 stations. Nexstar currently has a reach of 39% of U.S. television households.

As part of the deal, Nexstar would get ownership in WGN America, as well as Tribune’s stake in the Food Network.

Nexstar has been aggressive to coming to vMVPDs. Many of their local ABC, FOX, CBS, and select NBC affiliates stream across services.

To date, Tribune has streamed their FOX affiliates on fuboTV, DIRECTV NOW, YouTube TV, Hulu Live TV, and PlayStation Vue. Only Hulu and YouTube TV offer their CBS affiliates. Few of Tribune’s other owned stations have been made available on streaming services.
