Peacock, Netflix and HBO Max Among Streamers Bidding for Reimagined Version of ‘The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air’

“The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” is getting a makeover and it’s being coveted by big streamers. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Peacock, Netflix and HBO Max are all vying for the dramatic remake of the famed comedy titled “Bel-Air.” The new version has been in the development for over a year, after a four-minute pitch written by and starring newcomer and superfan Morgan Cooper went viral back in 2019.

Will Smith, Quincy Jones and Benny Medina, as well as creators Andy and Susan Borowitz, who were producers on the original series, are on board of the project as executive producers. The new series “will dive deeper into the inherent conflicts, emotions and biases of what it means to be a Black man in America today, while still delivering the swagger and fun nods to the original show,” THR reports.

The news comes as reboots and originals are top currencies for most streaming services. Netflix recently premiered a 10-episode adaptation of “The Baby-Sitters Club.” The series is based on novels by Ann M. Martin which were published between 1986 and 2000 and comes 25 years after the film adaption, which was directed by Melanie Mayron back in 1995.

Netflix also brought back “Unsolved Mysteries,” which originally ran from 1987 to 1999, presented by Robert Stack, a notable Hollywood actor in the 1950s and 1960s. It was being revived by creators John Cosgrove and Terry Dunn Meurer and Shawn Levy, producer of “Stranger Things.”

Newly launched Peacock also leveraged reboots of “Saved By The Bell,” and “Punky Brewster” as they were marketing the service. For their part, HBO Max was offering up reboots of “Gossip Girl,” and “Perry Mason” among others.
