Roku Says It Has to Be a “Win-Win” to Bring Services Like HBO Max & Peacock to Platform

Roku smashed all previous records, adding 3.2 million new active accounts this quarter. But, despite the growth, they are still without two of the newest major streaming services, Peacock and HBO Max.

In Mid-July, NBCUniversal’s Peacock launched without support for Roku (and Amazon Fire TV), after just as HBO Max, did in May (both are still without a deal).

Based on Roku CEO Anthony Wood’s comments on their Q2 Earnings Call, it doesn’t seem like they are any closer to a deal. Wood said that it’s not important for the platform to be the first to have a streaming service, but it must establish “win-win partnerships.”

In July, Matt Strauss, Chairman of Peacock, said in an interview that “it’s not a sprint, it’s a marathon for us. Our launch date on July 15, is our launch date. We’re in discussions with everybody … we would like to have the app available on all platforms, but we’re committed to launching on the date that we set forth.”

Both HBO Max and Peacock say they have apps ready to go on Roku, when the sides reach the deal.

Wood cited Disney+ as a good example of a “win-win” since Roku was the No. 1 connected device based on hours streamed for Disney+ in the week following the release of “Hamilton.” “We want to do more of those kinds of deals,” Wood said.
