‘Teenage Bounty Hunters’ Heads to Netflix, Regina King to Direct ‘One Night in Miami’ for Amazon Studios

“Teenage Bounty Hunters” and Regina King lead off the list of new shows and projects headed to streamers soon:

  • “Teenage Bounty Hunters” takes adolescent rebellion to a whole new level in Netflix’s original series, which debuts August 14. It stars Maddie Phillips and Anjelica Bette Fellini as fraternal twins bored by their Southern lifestyle and eager to kick things up. So they team with a bounty hunter (Kadeem Hardison) and go after local criminals. The series also stars Myles Evans, Mackenzie Astin, Spencer House, Devon Hales and Virginia Williams.

  • “One Night in Miami,” Emmy nominee and Oscar winner Regina King’s directorial debut, has sold worldwide rights to Amazon Studios. It follows a young Muhammad Ali (then Cassius Clay) on the night of February 25, 1964, after he defeats Sonny Liston for the world boxing championship. He celebrates with activist Malcolm X, singer Sam Cooke and football star Jim Brown. They also share their struggles and ultimately, the commitment to civil rights.

  • “John Wick” writer Derek Kolstad is adapting the Ubisoft’s hit videogame franchise “Splinter Cell” as an anime series for Netflix. The show has earned a two-season, 16-episode order from the streamer. “Splinter Cell” is a series of action videogames led by back ops agent Sam Fisher, a former Navy SEAL recruited by the NSA. Kolstad is a member of the writing team of “The Falcon and Winter Soldier,” produced by Marvel Studios, which will stream on Disney+.

  • “The Idhun Chronicles,” an original Spanish anime series, will also stream on Netflix this year. Written by Laura Gallego and Andrés Carrión, the five-episode show adapted the first volume of the bestseller “The Resistance.” The day the three Suns and three Moons came together in alignment over Idhun, Ashran, the necromancer, seized power and the reign of the winged snakes begins.

  • Sci-fi thriller “Invasion” has added Riz Ahmed and Oscar-winner Octavia Spencer (“The Help,” “Hidden Figures”) to the cast. Written and directed by Michael Pearce, it’s the follow-up to his film “Beast,” which earned him a BAFTA award. The movie, which will stream on Amazon Prime, follows two young brothers and their Marine dad (Ahmed), who is trying to protect them from a monstrous threat.

  • An Untitled Lady Macbeth” YA feature has been picked up by Amazon Studios, with Scooter Braun and Channing Tatum among its producers. S.J. Inwards will write the show, while John McPhail (“Anna and the Apocalypse”) directs. It’s about a teenage girl who copes with the consequences of her ambitions.

  • Action star Jean-Claude Van Damme is in France, shooting an new action-comedy “The Last Mercenary” for Netflix. Van Damme plays a former secret service agent who steps in when his son is falsely accused of drug trafficking.

  • Eros STX Global Corp, the new film and TV company created by STX Entertainment and Indian movie heavyweight Eros International, is targeting Hollywood, Bollywood and China. The combined entity raised $125 million of new equity funding. Streaming is a big focus: Eros plans to launch a global Eros STX brand and website in September.
