Swedish Streaming Service Lowers Prices as You Watch Bad Movies on Other Services

While there’s a lot of great content to stream these days, some of the big services also carry a lot of junk. One Swedish indie service is trying to remedy that by lowering its price whenever subscribers on Netflix, Hulu, HBO Max, and Disney+ watch something lousy.

Draken Film is run by Göteborg Film Festival. It pegs its constantly-changing price to the Bad Movie Index. Draken’s API tracks the popularity of movies on the major streaming services and cross-references them against ratings from review sites (IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes). Whenever critically panned movies surge in popularity on the big services, Draken Film retaliates by lowering its price to try to entice viewers to watch something, well, good.

“At Draken Film we put our heart and souls into carefully selecting films that offer something extra to the viewer and broaden their view of what quality film can be…By lowering our prices when the ‘Bad Movie Index’ goes down, we hope that more people will discover and be inspired by our selection,” said the chief executive of Draken Film and Göteborg Film Festival, Mirja Wester.

As of October, Draken Film’s membership currently costs 9 eur/month, thanks to BMI. The Swedish streaming service has a library consisting of arthouse films as well as classics and independent movies from international film festivals. The platform strives to provide a selection of geographically diverse entertainment and an equal gender balance of directors.

So rewatch “Ace Ventura Jr” on HBO Max all you want — it’s just lowering the price for Swedish cinephiles using Draken Film.
