Amazon Prime Video to Stream Seattle Sounders Games, Taking Over For YouTube TV

After a two-year deal with YouTube TV, a partnership with the Seattle Sounders MLS team came to an end in December. Fortunately for Sounders fans, Amazon Prime Video is taking over.

As part of a three-year deal, Amazon Prime Video will stream Sounders FC matches throughout Washington. Amazon Prime Video will carry all those games not airing nationally on ESPN, FOX, FS1, and Univision (simulcast on Twitter).

There has been a big shake-up in streaming deals in the last year. YouTube TV also ended their deal with Orlando City SC, while ESPN+, ended their in-market streaming deal with the Chicago Fire.

Late last season, D.C. United pulled the plug on their streaming deal with FloSports, who was plagued with streaming issues during their partnership.

The timing of the deal makes sense given that MLS asked teams not to sign long-term local TV deals past 2022.

In March, Sports Business Journal reported that the “MLS has instructed all 24 of its current clubs as well as its future expansion teams in Miami, Nashville and Austin to not have any local broadcast agreements that go beyond 2022. That is the year that the league’s national and international broadcast deals will expire, thus allowing MLS to potentially package any combination of those rights to future broadcast partners.”
