CuriosityStream Raises Additional $140 Million in Funding for Science & Nature Streaming Service

CuriosityStream, the science documentary streaming service from Discovery founder John Hendricks, announced that they have raised an additional $140MM in venture funding from Blum Capital Ventures and TimesSquare Capital Management.

The streaming service includes 2,000 on demand science, technology and nature documentary and features. The company hopes to expand their library to 3,000 titles by the end of 2019 including exclusives in 4K. The service is available on Apple TV, Chromecast, Roku, Fire TV, iOS, Android, Web, and Xbox One.

Last August, the company dropped the price their streaming service from $5.99 to $2.99 a month for HD and from $11.99 to $9.99 for 4K. That move came as reports of slower than expected subscriber growth. While in 2015 the company projected 5-7 million subscribers in the first few years, by the end of 2018 it had reached just 1 million paid subscribers.

The company also now has an ad-supported product called CuriosityStream Showcase. Viewers can watch some of CuriosityStream’s content by watching an unstoppable 15-second pre-roll ad and branding around the video.

For a limited time, new subscribers can try the service with an extended 30-Day Free Trial.
