HBO Max is bringing the heat and also the TARDIS, when it launches in 2020. The WarnerMedia streaming service just snagged exclusive streaming rights to the classic Doctor Who franchise, all 11 seasons included. The news comes as part of a deal with BBC studios which means the streamer will be the home of all future Doctor Who seasons after they air on BBC America.
Under the new licensing deal, HBO Max also has rights to several hundred episodes of multiple other hit BBC shows, including The Office, Top Gear, Luther, and The Honorable Woman. The deal also includes new titles Pure, Trigonometry, Stath Lets Flats, Home and Ghosts which will all stream exclusively on the platform upon its launch.
In July, HBO Max announced that it will be the new home for the beloved Friends after the show finishes its run on Netflix through 2019. Along with Friends, HBO Max will also be the new streaming home for all fare from The CW which was also previously housed at Netflix as well as The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and Pretty Little Liars.
Original content coming to HBO Max includes a Gossip Girl spinoff show set eight years after the original ended, Dune: The Sisterhood, The Flight Attendant and Made for Love, among many others. The streaming service also has films from prolific producer Greg Berlanti and Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine production company in the works.
