HBO Max to Be Exclusive US Streaming Home for New British ’80s Drama

Stephanie Sengwe

WarnerMedia announced today that upcoming streaming service, HBO Max, will be the exclusive, U.S. streaming home for a new period drama, “Boys” (working title), in partnership with Britain’s Channel 4. The series, written and produced by Russell T Davies, will air in the UK in 2020.

The five-part series follows the emotional journey of five friends during the 1980s, a decade in which everything changed, most notably with the rise of AIDS. The cast includes Olly Alexander, Nathaniel Curtis, Shaun Dooley, Omari Douglas, Stephen Fry, Neil Patrick Harris, Keeley Hawes, Callum Scott Howells, Tracy Ann Oberman and Lydia West.

“It is our delight to be collaborating with the talented Russell T Davies” said Jeniffer Kim, senior vice president of international originals, HBO Max. “He has crafted a beautiful coming of age story, exploring the excitement of new friendships and self-discovery during a period when there were so many unknowns. Russell’s mastery is so evident throughout and with Nicola’s producing expertise and Ch4’s collaboration, we at HBO Max are thrilled to partner in sharing this moving story.”

HBO Max launches in May 2020 for $14.99 a month — the same price as HBO Now. AT&T customers with HBO will get HBO Max at no additional cost. HBO Max will include 10,000 hours of programming at launch including the entire HBO service and library, a large offering of new original content and a slate of acquired and library programming (“Friends,” “Big Bang Theory,” “Sesame Street”).

When it launches, they will offer a bundle of AT&T TV and HBO Max, while in 2021, AT&T plans to launch an ad-supported version of HBO Max.
