At Disney's annual shareholders meeting, Disney CEO, Bob Iger, shared a hint of what’s to come with Disney+. Many people wondered if it would include Disney’s entire library of films that have historically locked away in the Disney Vault. The company has traditionally put home video and streaming releases available for purchase for a limited period of time, and then not made them available again for several years.
That’s about to change with the launch of Disney+ according to Iger — meaning that classics like Snow White, The Lion King, Little Mermaid, and newer films like Frozen and Moana will all be made available on the streaming service.
“The service, which I mentioned earlier is going to launch later in the year, is going to combine what we call Library product, movies and television, with a lot of original product as well. And at some point fairly soon after launch, it will house the entire Disney motion picture library, so the movies that you speak of that traditionally have been kept in a ‘vault’ and brought out basically every few years will be on the service.”
Disney’s OTT service is expected to launch later this year, with original movies and shows including a $100 million, 10 episodes live-action Star Wars TV series from Iron Man director John Favreau. They have already announced television series based on Monsters Inc., High School Musical, and a Thor spin-off called Loki.
They will also be making films exclusively available for the service like live action remakes of Lady and the Tramp and The Sword in the Stone, the Anna Kendrick Christmas comedy Noelle, and Timmy Failure, based on the best-selling books.
