Google Cast Support Expanding to More LG Smart TVs Soon
Certain models of LG smart TV have already gotten the new update with Google Cast included.
Google Cast can be an incredibly helpful feature for people wanting to watch a video they found on their phones on the bigger screen of a TV. While similar to Apple’s AirPlay, Google Cast attempts to make it smoother to search for video on an easier-to-use phone interface. Fortunately for many cord-cutters, Google Cast support is now coming to additional models of LG smart TVs, after rolling out on those devices for the first time earlier this year.
Key Details:
- Some LG smart TVs made in 2023 will soon be able to use Google Cast.
- LG first added Google Cast support to TVs in January, and all new sets will have it.
- Thus far, the LG C3 and G3 models from 2023 are the first to get the update with Google Cast.
A software update dubbed webOS version 24 will deliver Google Cast support to a selection of LG smart TVs manufactured in 2023. It will allow customers with Android mobile devices to cast video directly to their LG set. Google Cast can be used in conjunction with popular streaming apps such as Disney+, Hulu, Netflix, Prime Video, and others.
FlatPanelsHD reports that webOS 24 was originally intended to begin rolling out in 2025. Nevertheless, select models of 2023 LG smart TVs have already gotten webOS 24 in a new firmware update, and can now use Google Cast alongside the other upgrades in the operating system.
Thus far, owners of LG C3 and G3 smart TVs report that firmware version 23.20.50 is now delivering them the ability to use Google Cast. WebOS 24 is still planned as a gradual rollout; other sets that will get Google Cast support include OLED and LCD models, including the “QNED” line.
FlatPanelsHD also reports that webOS 24 will be introduced to some 2022 8K OLED and LCD models eventually, so there is a possibility Google Cast support comes to those TVs as well. LG smart TVs have had support for Apple’s AirPlay function since 2019.
“For the first time ever, LG Smart TVs will offer webOS upgrades for up to 5 years to better serve you,” LG confirmed when asked about the update by FlatPanelsHD. “Now you can upgrade your TV just like your smartphone. Experience a wealth of features and services with the new evolution of webOS.”
LG first began rolling out Google Cast support in January, when it announced that all new sets manufactured would allow customers to use the feature. At that time, the company did not clarify whether or not it would bring Google Cast to past TV models; now, the answer is clearly yes.
