Coffee Makers: FAQs

Why don’t I get 12 actual cups of coffee from my 12 cup coffee maker?

An age old questions with coffee makers—the cup size is measured in 4 to 5 ounce serving sizes (the industry standard) versus an 8 ounce measurement we use for other beverages.

What temperature is normal for brewed coffee?

While we’ve outlined that you can customize your brew temperature with many of our reviewed models, 195°–205° F is the recommended range for coffee brewing.

How often should I clean my coffee maker?

We recommend that you clean your coffee maker at least every 3 months. Without proper cleaning mineral deposits may accumulate due to impurities in the water used to brew. Descaling is the process of removing these minerals using vinegar or other cleaners. If you don’t remove these deposits you can’t expect to get the full function and flavor from your coffee maker.

Why does my coffee taste weak or bitter?

There’s an assortment of reasons for why you might not be getting an ideal cup of coffee. If you’re using one of our recommended brewers then you’re likely struggling to get the perfect cup due to the grind size or ratio of coffee to water. It’s recommended to use 8 grams of coffee per 4.5 oz coffee serving. Depending on your taste preference a good guide is 1-2 tablespoons per serving. Too fine of a grind will cause the beans to get over extracted, causing a bitter cup of coffee. Be sure to only grind the beans to the recommended grind for your coffee maker.

What is pre-infusion and should I care?

Pre-infusion allows all the grinds to soak for a short period of time before they’re brewed. The theory behind it is that by allowing all the beans to soak before being brewed you’re ensuring even brewing of the entire filter versus partially over brewed and partially under brewed sections. The pre-infusion process allows any carbon dioxide trapped in the beans to escape making a generally smoother less acidic cup of coffee. As a rule of thumb, pre-infusion should last between 30 seconds to 1 minute and the amount of water used should be twice the amount of ground beans.

What is the SCAA?

SCAA stands for the Specialty Coffee Association of America. A SCAA standard is a high-quality recommendation by their Standards Committee and thus we hold coffee makers who’ve produced SCAA-approved coffee as industry leaders.
