Report: Apple’s Streaming Service Planned to Launch By April

According to a report in The Information, Apple plans to roll-out their streaming service in the U.S. by mid-April, then expand to 100 other countries within a few months. They plan to mix original programming, third party services, and the ability to subscribe to other services through Apple like HBO and Showtime — similar to Amazon Channels.

The company has partnered with A24 who produced films like Lady Bird and Moonlight to make films for the service and announced a multi-year deal for original shows from Oprah. They have quietly acquired programming including a J.J. Abrams limited series starring Jennifer Garner, Steven Spielberg’s Amazing Stories, a futuristic drama from Hunger Games director Francis Lawrence, and thriller series from M. Night Shyamalan.

The news comes as Apple has partnered to add AirPlay 2 and HomeKit support to Samsung, LG, and VIZIO Smart TVs. This means you can play music, movies, podcast, or display photos on your screen without the need for an Apple TV, as well as control your TV directly from your iPhone or iPad.

Samsung plans to add an iTunes Movies and TV Shows App on 2019 Samsung Smart TVs starting this spring, with 2018 models receiving the app via a software update.
