Disney Withdraws Local News Channels From NewsOn App, The Desk Reports

NewsOn — a local news service that allows users to see local news broadcasts and video clips from TV stations across the U.S. in one app — just lost one of its biggest backers as Disney “pulled local news broadcasts from around a dozen ABC-owned stations,” The Desk reports. The media conglomerate is slowing down on outsourcing its content in favor of their own streaming interests.

NewsOn was founded by a group of five local news broadcasters, including Disney’s ABC-Owned Television Stations (ABCOTS), in 2015. Now, however, The Desk is reporting that ABCOTS has pulled WABC-TV (Channel 7) in New York, KABC-TV (Channel 7) in Los Angeles, WLS-TV (Channel 7) in Chicago, WPVI-TV (Channel 6) in Philadelphia, KGO-TV (Channel 7) in San Francisco, KTRK (Channel 13) in Houston, KFSN (Channel 30) in Fresno and WTVD (Channel 11) in Raleigh, North Carolina, from the platform, suggesting they no longer want to be a participant.

Last June, NewsOn launched on the Apple TV, mere weeks after it announced its launch on Amazon Fire TV and joined other services such as Haystack TV, STIRR and CBSN in bringing local news to cord-cutters.

NewsOn was launched in November 2015 — with support from founding members Cox Media Group, Hearst Television, Media General, Raycom Media and the ABC Owned Television Station Group. Sinclair Broadcast Group announced an investment in news service in January 2016.
