Elisabeth Moss Signs First-Look Deal at Hulu, While Ryan Reynolds Joins Quibi for Animated Series

The pandemic has halted TV production, but not future plans. As production is calibrated going forward, here are some of the most notable TV deals this week:

• Elisabeth Moss has signed a joint first-look deal with Fox 21 and Hulu to star in “Black Match,” an anthology show the studio calls a “psychosexual neo-noir thriller set in modern-day Los Angeles.” Moss’ new production company, Love & Squalor, will produce. The former “Mad Men” actress won an Emmy for Hulu’s “A Handmaiden’s Tale” and next stars in “Candy,” the real-life story of Candy Montgomery, the Texas murderer.

• Ryan Reynolds (“Deadpool”) and Samuel L. Jackson (“Pulp Fiction”) are starring and executive producing “Futha Mucka,” a new animated comedy series for Quibi. The gist: Ryan loves Sam, but when an accident causes Sam to become Ryan’s caregiver, the weirdness begins.

• Hulu is working on an alt history TV series about Hillary Clinton, based on Curtis Sittenfeld’s best-selling book “Rodham.” It imagines a world in which Hillary never married Bill Clinton. The show comes from “The Affair” co-creator Sarah Treem, who will write and executive produce. Hulu currently carries the four-part docuseries “Hillary.”

• HBO-HBO Max has renewed its “Perry Mason” remake for a second season. This gritty version of the famed lawyer stars Matthew Rhys as a divorced war vet, drinking too much and living paycheck to paycheck as a down-on-his-luck PI in 1930s Los Angeles.

• Conan O’Brien’s Team Coco, is producing five stand-up specials for HBO Max in August, starting with hour-long specials from Beth Stelling, a comic who has written for “I Love You America” with Sarah Silverman and “The Last O.G.,” and James Veitch, who debuted on “Conan” in 2017. Veitch’s HBO Max special, “James Veitch, Straight to VHS,” explores technology, retro-gaming and finding love through troubleshooting theory. Separate specials from Chris Redd and Moses Storm will be filmed at a later date.

• “The Act” star Joey King has signed a first-look deal with Hulu. She recently stared and executive produced the Netflix film “The Kissing Booth 2.” She is the youngest person, at 20, with such a deal at a streaming service.

• HBO Max is planning to stream various international originals. For example, it will run five seasons of the Italian crime series “Gomorrah,” based on Roberto Saviano’s bestseller, as well as the film spinoff “The Immortal.” Also on-board is “Veneno,” a Spanish-language co-production about Spain’s famous trans TV personality Christina Ortiz. So is “Singletown,” a reality show about couples returning to single life. And finally, “The Great Pottery Throw Down” is coming from the team behind “The Great British Bake Off.”

• Amazon Studios has ordered “Paper Girls,” based on the best-selling graphic novels written by “Lost” writer Brian K. Vaughan and illustrated by Cliff Chiang. The story is about four girls who get caught in a war between time travelers in 1988. Now they have to save the world!
