ESPN Partners with Mobile Streaming Service Quibi to Bring Daily Sports Highlights Show

After raising $1B even before launch, Quibi which was started by DreamWorks founder, Jeffrey Katzenberg, and former eBay CEO, Meg Whitman, has been signing up big names to their upcoming streaming service.

When it launches next April, add ESPN to the list of their content partners. Quibi (short for quick bites) will focus on high-quality short form content that is designed to be watched on your smartphone. ESPN will be the exclusive U.S. multi-sport content provider for Quibi’s curated news and information programming, Daily Essentials. The new ESPN show, available only on Quibi, will feature daily episodes and breaking news covering the biggest stories in sports.

Back in November 2017, ESPN launched SportsCenter on Snapchat, which airs two daily editions with 3-5 minutes of with a mix of the latest sports news, highlights and commentary. This doesn’t sound that too dissimilar.

“Wherever fans are having a conversation around sports, ESPN wants to be there,” said Connor Schell, EVP of Content, ESPN. “We’re looking forward to taking the best of what we do and delivering it in a way that resonates with Quibi subscribers looking to be informed, entertained and engaged around the sports news of the day.”

The mobile streaming streaming will offer two plans — $4.99 with ads and $7.99 without ads. The ad-supported product will include a pre-roll ad, as well as a 1-2 mid-roll ads depending on the length of the content.

Recently, the company has signed-up news networks like NBC News and BBC to join their Daily Essentials programming, which will supplement their serialized programming.

“We’re excited to partner with ESPN, the premiere brand in sports reporting, to deliver a daily curated sports highlight show that gives the audience on-the-go exactly what they want — all of the biggest moments in the world of sports — and all of it in under 10 minutes,” said Jeffrey Katzenberg, Founder and Chairman of the Board, Quibi.

Quibi has also announced original shows like from Filmmakers Sam Raimi (Spiderman), Guillermo del Toro (The Shape of Water), and Antoine Fuqua (The Magnificent Seven). The company is also creating a music competition show created and hosted by Justin Bieber’s manager Scooter Braun, as well as a show on the founding of Snapchat called Frat Boy Genius.
