Tony and Emmy-winning actress Kristin Chenoweth will headline “The Biggest Star in Appleton” for Disney+. The series is currently in development, reports Deadline.
Written by Paul Rudnick, who scripted the movies “Sister Act” and “Addams Family Values,” the upcoming comedy posits Chenoweth as a Wisconsin mom and waitress whose passion is her star turns at the local community theater. That status is challenged by a New York chorus girl who suddenly moves back home.
Rudnick, Chenoweth and Dan Jinks will executive produce the comedy. Chenoweth won an Emmy for “Pushing Daisies,” which was also produced by Jinks.
Chenoweth, who moves easily between theater and screen, made her name in television in a variety of roles, including “The West Wing,” Glee” and “The Good Wife.”
A classically trained coloratura soprano, she was the original Glinda in the Broadway musical hit “Wicked.” She also voiced Princess Skystar in the 2017 animated film “My Little Pony.”
In addition to “Appleton,” Jinks is producing a separate musical project for Disney: “Marley, A Christmas Carol.”
Disney+’s library is vast, but it’s scored with originals, such as “The Mandalorian” series, set in the “Star Wars” universe, and “High School Musical: The Series.”
The streamer is available for $6.99/month or bundled with Disney+, Hulu and ESPN for $12.99/month.
